About The Artwork

I was inspired to paint this piece titled Notting Hill Carnival unmasked, to tell the story of the history behind the carnival we celebrate today A carnival today that represent the diversity of London today. A carnival that underpin the struggle and resilience of the slaves while embarking of that long journey which many did not make. A carnival that earmarked the celebration of the emancipation of slaves in 1863. A carnival that celebrated due to the freedom gained from 1958 Notting Hill race riot mostly perpetuated by Teddi Boys on Windrush generation West Indians descendants and other immigrants of that generation. A carnival to which we celebrated today with remembrance of Heroes such as Claude Jones While the painting is rendered in vibrant contrasting colours which attempt to capture the celebrative mood of the Carnival celebrated today on the Streets of London, Trinidad and Tobago, Rio de Janeiro, the collage at the background underpins the struggle belies the pain some people went through to attain the celebration we enjoy today.
