About The Artwork

Oil paint and cold wax on canvas with heavy duty stretcher bars. Steven Plount (b. 1952) is an American artist. The goal is to paint as thinly as possible in transparent layers working the surface up to a sustained luminosity. Making something that is still and silent yet continually transient and giving an impression of movement. Empty layers of galkyd lite and beeswax are added over finished works to add a softness and a surface of transparent brush strokes to enliven and deepen the surface. Beeswax adds depth and translucency to the paint and enhances the luminosity that is present via the layering and the underlying linen ground. It evens the plane of the entire surface. Beeswax mattes the highly reflective oil paint adding quality that seems more inviting, more friendly. ”Some days the color form flows and lines up nicely out of pure chance combined with experience in a thoughtful and painterly way making a space that is beyond words carrying a phenomenological moment of being and that is what is searched for ….. mostly something beautiful.” He is inspired by skies and clouds, emptiness, simple beauties, color, the movement of the hand, brushes, early to mid-twentieth Century poetry, painters, and paintings, the utter and focused intent of the Pahari and Rajput painters of the 19th and earlier centuries, the great masters of painting of the world, clear white, finely made, waiting surfaces where I can create spaces filled with hovering, luminous clouds of paint imbued with life.
