Maria Callas had a turbulent life. One thing always strikes me as we talk about her: as she lost weight, she lost her voice. Much talks have been around about whether correlation between the two events exists or not. She supposedly needed to slim down her face to perform in Medea. She soon learned that it would come with a price. Some even think that this diet caused dermatomyositis, itself explaining her later death. Anyway, when I look at this painting, I love to think that everything is possible. Simultaneously, everything comes with a price to pay. Maria Callas embodies the tension between those forces.
