Subject: Cattedrale di Sant'Agata, Catania, Italy Description: This painting is a depiction of the facade of the Cattedrale di Sant'Agata and the Porta Uzeda in Catania, Italy. Catania was rebuilt in the Sicilian Baroque style by Gian Battista Vaccarini following the destruction of the city in the 1693 earthquake. The Cathedral is at the heart of the city with the Porta acting as one of the primary entities to the Piazza del Duomo. As part of the reconstruction of the city, strong urban planning regulations were put in place to minimize the risk in future earthquakes including disallowing bridging connections between buildings as they may cause a domino effect. The Porto, originally commissioned by Giuseppe Lanza in 1695 as a simple arched entry, was expanded to include the floors above in the 18th century by Bishop Salvatore Ventimiglia proving that patience pays off and that there is an exception to every rule. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
