About The Artwork
On the process of exploring the metamorphosis of human body forms I have come across many vigorous pull and push of external and internal elements that have created different forms of body bonsai. From East to West, past to present, those bonsai molds have emerged in many different forms: they appear as trends, customs and social systems etc., and therefore multiple human postures are formed. The painting mimics the make up style from the Tang dynasty to reflect on the forced metamorphosis of people in a country under 1984. I find this make up style very fascinating so I incorporated into this modern portrait. The surname Chan is one of the biggest surnames in Chinese.
