Painting: Acrylic, Paint on Canvas.
Beloved Kansas City Jazz musician Charlie "Bird" Parker. Charlie is the third in a series of large scale acrylic paintings that honor the Jazz Greats. Inspired by a tumultuous few years in the south growing up, I saw the unhindered display of racism. As a 13 year old, I decided to devote my life to art and honoring what African American musicians who not only overcame, but thrived despite of the opposition they may have encountered. This painting is on hand stretched linen canvas, I painting it unprimed with a bright orange underpainting to make the blues really "sing". The stretcher bars are constructed from heavy duty pine.
I hope the viewer feels the fluid and freedom that only jazz music can evoke. This piece especially made me feel a deep, bluesy joy as I painted Charlie. R.I.P. Charlie Parker, I honor you with this painting.
