About The Artwork

This meticulous copy of the original French masterpiece hanging in the Louvre Museum in Paris was done as part of an American group of classically-trained artists led by my husband, acclaimed classical portrait artist Frank Covino. The entire trip was profiled in an article in The Artist's Magazine. We challenged ourselves to copy perfectly the chosen old Master paintings. I selected this Pierre Subleyras and a Van Dyck. The complex process of duplicating Old Master methods requires patience and technical exactitude, as there are many stages, unlike the more familiar modern "alla prima" paintings. The first step was the preparation of a traditional gesso wood panel , including marble dust in it to ensure "tooth" / adhesion of the paint layers. Next came the detailed charcoal value sketch, and finally the oil verdaccio (ie. grey-green) underpainting, which required several months to complete. At that point, at long last, we were given permission by the French authorities to complete the lovely oil color overpaintings on the floor of the Louvre. The oil paints used are of the highest archival quality, and we used a traditional Renaissance recipe for the medium. All was done on a sturdy Belgian linen - wrapped masonite support, ensuring the longevity of the painting. Only upon successful completion did my painting receive the official seal of approval from the Louvre Museum director of copyistes (...see enclosed photo) . My website www.Barbara-Ellis.com lists my extensive art education, including studying in Florence Italy, but my major influence has been the incredible influence of Frank Covino, an artistic genius of the highest order, who insisted that every student respect the Classical Academic process by using the very best archival ingredients and techniques of the Old Masters. The results are worth all of the effort. It is an investment in quality. This painting will delight the eye for centuries.

I am a classically trained artist with over thirty years of experience . I was born in Washington .DC. and grew up in New England. I have lived in Vermont for decades, because it is one of the most beautiful, unspoiled places on the planet....perfect for artistic inspiration. I married master artist/teacher Mr. Frank Covino, a world-reknowned portrait artist and author of 8 books, and we shared a wonderful marriage for over 32 years, before his untimely death last year.
