In September 2016 I moved to Chicxulub Puerto in the Mexican Yucatan. 65 Million years ago a 6-9 mile asteroid slammed into the earth making a crater 110 miles wide and 12 miles deep causing worldwide climate disruption and a mass extinction of 75% of plants and animals on Earth including the dinosaurs. When I moved to Chicxulub, I was experimenting with a painting technique discovered by the Mexican painter, David Alfaro Siqueiros. Paints of different densities will mix on a flat surface and produce beautiful accidental designs. In physics, the competition of the densities is called a Rayleigh-Taylor instability and it is found in exploding stars and is used by engineers to extract oil from the earth. I remember looking at one of my early paintings and thinking - is this is what it would look like if an asteroid slammed into the earth? What would happen in the water? Now? In a thousand years? What would be left? I have found that using this technique to provide answers is motivating me. I use the paintings to meditate. Their content is largely accidental, like life. It helps me to think of how insignificant, and yet how grateful, I am for being present.
