Painting: Oil, Pencil on Canvas.
I started painting on round canvas in 1999. In 2000, my round canvas painting series "Roots" that comprised of 40 round canvases was very well received by the art enthusiasts in Karachi Art world; however some criticised the use of encircling canvas for paintings and emphasized on square canvas as the ideal medium for fine art.
Now in 2016, many artists display their work of art on round canvases increasingly, but they are unaware of the quintessence this "round" shape holds. In 2000, when I decided to work on round canvas I wanted to convey a point that this circular shape is an essential element of the world.
Firstly if one observes that the world is round, its movement is circular including the entire solar system; all the planets orbit around the sun in a circular motion.
Secondly, even in spirituality the dervish dance and the moment of trance leaves the person dancing in a circular movement while paying tribute to the Great Being.
Hence, it is because of these reasons that inspired me to experiment my art on a circular canvas as my work is about nature, landscape, devotion and this medium was symbolic of the message I convey through my work.
In the last two months, I was at a break from my art work due to some other important commitments. When asked by people what do I plan to do next I responded by saying that anything can click and inspire me, when I will get that I will resume my work again.
Few days back I visited the Full Circle Art Gallery, instantly the entrance view seemed so awe inspiring that I decided to paint it. Even though I have visited the gallery a few times before too, but as I said it is that one moment which the artist seeks so to capture and preserve forever in his piece of art.
