ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'Cockatiel' belongs to an ongoing series of paintings based on portraits of Australia's diverse bird-life. These dynamic works focus on capturing the personalities of each individual bird using layers of paint and gestural mark making to breath life into the finished work. 'Cockatiel' was inspired by a trip Geoffrey took to the Daintree National Park in far North Queensland, where he meet several of these inquisitive and chatty parrots while taking a break at a roadhouse in the tropical rain-forest.

Geoffrey Carran is a contemporary artist based in the pristine beach side town of Jan Juc on Victoria’s Surf Coast south of Melbourne, Australia. He has become widely recognised for his unique paintings of Australian birds and plants, adding his vibrant, energetic approach to his subject matter, projects and collaborations. His prolific approach in the studio is fuelled by his life. He paints his experiences, transforming them into the pictorial. Carran marvels at the everyday and this enthusiasm is instantly recognizable in his painting, evident in the play between layers, colours and motifs. His work is passionate and playful, yet seeks to evoke a sense of wonder in nature and the way our histories tie together through fictional stories, personal experiences and the audiences psyche. Born and raised in New Zealand he completed a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2000 and after years spent chasing surf, starting his own business and traveling he settledin Melbourne and completed a Master of Fine Art at RMIT University in 2008. Geoffrey Carran has exhibited his work throughout Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, London and New York. He has a design label Martinich&Carran with his wife and fellow artist Rowena Martinich, who he also collaborates with to create huge colourful mural’s which celebrate both of their vivacious approach to painting and life. The pair also produces a range of prints, home-wares and is often found working closely with architects and companies, consulting on projects or translating their work into a new project or building.
