About The Artwork

Coconut Shack was inspired by a trip to Jamaica. I was drawn in by the dense tropical landscape with its vibrant colours and positive energy. This particular scene shows two men doing business over a small wooden shack selling coconuts. I originally took a photograph of the moment out of a bus window in passing without intention. What really stood out to me was the vibrant colours of the mans shirt, along with the healthy green coconuts. I am really interested in the fact you cannot see either of the mens faces and it makes you question their identity which leads to misinterpretation of what they are doing. I also love the illustrative humour in the scene how they are only dealing cheap fruit but it appears as a serious transaction. I wanted to send this moment into space for eternity, that minor moment they sat down together became fixed on the canvas for as long as the painting survives.

Through the process of painting with oils on canvas, Jacob Lucas creates vibrant and otherworldly landscapes that appear both playful and expressive. By using collage, water colour and pencil as a starting point for his landscapes, surprising juxtapositions of plants, trees, animals and other structures are pieced together allowing Lucas to construct his own landscape experiences through the process of painting. Lucas also plays with ideas of seduction and paranoia within his landscapes. By using dreams and nostalgic memories, as well as inspiration taken from both traditional and contemporary landscape paintings, his paintings can appear artificial and alien in that features of the natural world are transformed and applied in strange and unfamiliar territories.
