About The Artwork

When I painted this I thought of rivers and streams. The rusty color of the background makes one think of fall and rocky mountainous regions. I've never been to Colorado but for some reason this made me think of it. I imagined a river on a fall afternoon where the colors of the leaves in the mountain ranges change color peppering the landscape with vibrancy. Keep in mind the frame can be removed.

When I was sixteen my parents took me on a trip to meet a woman that they were being interviewed by who from that day forward changed me spiritually, mentally and creatively. My parents worked as domestics and throughout their life they came into contact with many influential people. This woman they were about to meet that day turned out to be Helen Frankenthaler. They worked for her for around 9 months and I still have fond memories of her and her home at Shippan Point, Connecticut. We took walks, went swimming at the YMCA, she gave me and my parents a tour of her studio to show new works and I even shook hands with a friend of hers. His name was Clement. At 16 I didn't know anything and it struck me later on that I met a great artist and critic. It wasn't just meeting her that made me want to paint. Although I found her mannerisms and way of speaking to be intriguing it was also that smell of the paint in her studio and the paintings themselves that captured me. I never thought that paintings could be like that; big and spacious and just random splashes of color. It was a treat for me at my age to see these beautiful works of art and thats basically what started it all. I am self taught and have been painting since 17 but I never thought about showing them until about two years ago when I branched out to local galleries and even collaborated with local artists on pop up art shows in the city of Troy NY where I lived for 4 years. I never went to school for art and I would have really loved it but I never took that path for some reason but I still enjoyed painting. It was an escape for me. Sadly Mrs Frankenthaler passed away a few years ago and I dont think she was recognized enough when she was present as she is now. But I always see her influence and style in everything around me.The clouds and the skies, the rain drying up on sidewalks that leave color field like patterns, old walls and eroded surfaces her mark is there where she will always reside. I will be adding more paintings in the times to come. Stay tuned.
