For "Colours of Women" I use menstrual blood, lipstick, rouge, eyeliner and eye shadow as painting materials, which are traditionally associated with being a woman. I examine with this work femininity, physicality, menstruation and the taboos that go along with it. For thousands of years, menstruating women have been considered impure in various cultures. Even in the Western world, this natural process is associated with shame and/or disgust for many people. It is still true that menstruating is best done in secret! The paintings literally bring this hidden act of bleeding to the tableau. The blood is to be seen, and marvelled at. Simply because of the quantitative limitations of this material, something that is normally thrown away, becomes something special, something desirable. The blood becomes paint, not waste. However, the female curves in the paintings are not exclusively executed with blood, but also with lipstick, an artificial cultural product that stands in contrast to the naturalness of blood. These two materials symbolise the two spheres of nature and culture that constantly affect women. We are supposed to be "beautiful", gladly with the help of make-up, but at the same time appear as "natural" as possible. But what does "natural" mean? What about us is natural, and what is culturally acquired? Is biological sex something natural or is it also culturally contructed? These questions have shaped gender research as well as public discourse for decades. The use of make-up products in the paintings thus also addresses the expectations that are placed on women regarding beauty and physicality. Expectations that have intensified considerably in the course of the omnipresent self-optimisation and the influence of social media in recent decades. The title "Colours of Women" can also be understood in a broader sense: As a reference to the desirable diversity within the group "woman", because the (ideal) woman does not exist.

My art is strongly inspired by my studies of Archaeology and Philosophy. I explore how rituals can be translated into today's societies and how womenhood is defined by gender roles, sometimes also using my menstrual blood for paintings.
