Currently, I am looking at the concept ‘Soulmate’ . Does your soulmate exist? With over 6 billion humans on the planet is it still possible to meet your one true soulmate, or is it far more likely to meet multiple soulmates in a lifetime? Can a life partner and a soul mate be the same person? Can a soulmate be a friend or animal or does the relationship need to be intimate to qualify? Through painting exploration and meditation I’m attempting to ask and answer these questions. This is a playful theme and allows for fun and exciting discoveries.

Every piece in this series of 18 paintings starts with a question that I try to answer through overlapping abstract shapes and marks, and with acrylic paint and mixed media as my materials of choice. I prefer not to be committed to a paintbrush and I like to be resourceful by finding various tools and found objects for application. Painting with a loaded palette knife and painting wet-on-wet are my favorite methods at the moment. Eventually, through exploring and mixing on the canvas various elements of form and color will start to fuse together to “solve” the painting or answer the questions I’ve been asking. There is rarely any concept design or pre-planning either, as I prefer to work spontaneously and as in the moment as possible. However each panel or canvas is linked through a similar thought process, as well as consistent artistic methods, and through the building of layers. These multiple layers are underneath the final finished piece that you initially see, but on second examination it’s possible to identify much more; a treasure buried beneath the sea! I prefer for the art work to surprise me as I work out the questions that arise along the journey to completion, and hopefully there is a story waiting to be ‘read’ by the viewer too.

Angella is an artist residing and creating in Vancouver, Canada, but grew up in the prairies of Alberta. Currently using mixed media and acrylics to create abstract expressionist paintings that flow from an intuitive place of border-less meditative visions. Angella is motivated by: The idea of freedom from the bondage of constant thought and the western brain. Her paintings are meant to induce bliss and solitude for the eyes and mind; escapism from the constant negativity of the news media that surrounds us. She believes that a beautiful state can be achieved by seeking colorful and peaceful visuals through meditation sessions, and that anyone can access this state through their own creative and beautiful state. Method: Her paintings are created through memory of a recent visualization during meditation, a dream at night remembered, or intuitively on the spot. The only conceptual pre-planning are photos of color palettes taken from nature when she walks to her studio. Palette knives, brushes, sponges, and found objects are all used as creative tools to apply paint and other mediums, and most of her paintings contain an under layer of cloth, comics, netting, and found objects that hint through on the final piece, and add depth and texture to the final painting.
