I began the Companion series to make a grouping with the original painting I created called Perpetual Coral. I isolated the brushstroke to develop an abstract composition using gesture and white over a colored ground. In Companion I I started with covering the ground with an iridescent blue ink on the textured canvas from residual collaged materials. The overall brushstroke pattern pushes against the painting edges and creates a rhythmatic texture that moves the eyes of the viewer in multiple directions at once. Companion I is a call to use the boundaries of physical space to your advantage and remain free within those constraints by remaining true to your individuality. When I started the Companion series I was especially inspired by the monochromes of Robert Ryman.
