About The Artwork

My process includes layering of the painterly images, with each successive layer the previous layers are still present. I like to allow the paint to take on its own life. I paint standing up so I can take advantage of my tallness, sometimes swinging my arms freely across the surface of the painting, other times sitting for more detailed work. I want the painting to look free flowing, contriving its own destiny and without looking pinched. Acrylic paint has a wonderful colour range so I make decisions quite quickly. I usually make a rough sketch in charcoal. I have given this painting some texture with with gesso as a basis upon which paint.

Mark Baldwin is a dancer and multi media artist specialising in Painting and it's relationship to Choreography. He was born in the British Colony of Fiji. As a young child his Fijian mother took him with her to the ballet which she loved. At Art School he fell in love with the American Abstract Expressionists and the work they were doing with the great American choreographer Merce Cunningham and the composer John Cage. The scholarship he won in his first year at art school paid for the extensive training he undertook to become a highly trained dancer. Today Mark Baldwin makes lush often paired down paintings. They take the viewer into a world of a shapes which to him represent the human body, curving or bending into the picture space. The paintings go beyond the body evoking moods, gardens, sunlight and stories. He works between London and Silves in the Algarve Portugal. The paintings exist in time and space changing with the light. They represent a life time of work. The struggle for perfection and musicality, they carry memories and experiences pulled from the black hole of creativity. Presently he is Academic Visitor University of Cambridge in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Nicola Clayton FRS. The give lectures and demonstration on the nature of creativity, perception and Mental Time Travel.
