Painting: Oil on Paper.
This is one of a pair that have a similar appearance, though there is a continuing series of other, similar paintings based around a sense of dynamic movement. This was initially inspired by the western film, but also the idea of a vitality or a dance of figures, of energy, and even movement of the land itself. It is also a vehicle with which to generate semi-accidental marks and gestures, which at times seem almost text-like, or like ancient markings or scratchings.
Oils on paper is a slightly unconventional combination to use but I enjoy the flatness or the paper and the contrast, over this, of the opaque paint and its unpredictability. As well as an almost photo-realist style at times, I am also creating in these series of paintings something more immediate and 'primal', and the subject of tribal peoples alongside cinema and its occasional falsehoods is quite powerful.
This painting is framed in a simple, black frame which contrasts nicely with the white of the paper.
