About The Artwork

EVERYTHING BECOMES MEANINGFUL ‘What does the artist mean with this work? What is he implying? With what and of what is he trying to convince us?’ Anyone who looks at a work of art wants to comprehend it, to explain it, if only to himself. Apparently, this is a human and compelling desire. Based on this, you could conclude that through his work the artist wields a powerful tool: spurring his audience to think, whilst being able to sway these thoughts in whatever direction he chooses. What would happen if he were to refrain from doing the latter? Time for an experiment. D-CONNECT DISCONNECTS The question is: WHAT would happen if I, as a painter, were to completely disassociate myself from all social, political and emotional engagement (read: messages)? What connections would the viewer make? The ensuing question would then be: HOW can I disconnect myself from a work and its viewers, in such a way as to eliminate any need for understanding, including my own? The answer: with a dictionary, simple arithmetic and an internet search engine. I started my experiment by opening a dictionary at a random page, selecting the tenth word and entering it into my search engine, which brought up an infinite number of images. I then repeated the process, selecting the 20th, 30th and sometimes the 40th and 50th word. Three to five of these images were subsequently used as the groundwork of each composition or painting. VIEWER WITH ADDED VALUE Virtually everyone who had looked at the works without knowing about my experiment had questions or comments. Here are a few examples: ‘Even today, antibiotics are prescribed unnecessarily. A doctor dressed up as a clown - or am I mistaken?’ ‘Why is the lady trying to comfort or pet that Macaque monkey? Are you drawing a comparison between apes and the fact that Corbusier was obsessed with standardisation?’ ‘That’s funny; a hearing aid that filters out lies. That would be a great invention!’ ‘The connection you established between the mining industry and fashion-consciousness is remarkable. Industrialisation has, after all, contributed substantially to fashion.’ ‘Did you consciously choose to use old & new in many of your paintings as added contrast? Or are you merely referring to various art movements?’ ‘I completely understand how you are trying to show us that the court of justice can also be a theatre.’ What conclusions can be drawn from this? ALL FOR THE UNFETTERED PERCEPTION OF ART This experiment confirms the existence of our ‘need-to-understand’. Apparently, our brain needs to find and register possible explanations for what we see. We don’t like it when we have no explanation for something. We want every mystery or riddle to be clarified. Does this impose a barrier on our perception of art? Yes and no. If we are compelled to go in search of the artist’s one true explanation of the principle behind his work, it does. If we can be at peace with our individualistic view of this work - which may or may not correspond to that of the artist - we are placing ourselves on a completely different level with regard to the perception of art: we look at the work as a mirror in which we allow our fantasy and emotions free rein. Our opinion is our own truth, unfettered and free from frustration. A work of art that offers no explanation of itself but does offer one of its viewer is, in my opinion, entitled to a much higher position within our perception of art. This is why I consciously expunged the meaning an artist conventionally attaches to his artworks; to allow the viewers’ own thoughts to flow freely.
