Daily Layers / Typographic Blues is a series of five paintings. They were created in a period when I actually wanted to rip my clothes off as soon as I got home. Not only because I wanted to change into something more comfortable but mainly because I wanted to get out of the "straitjacket". Undressing felt liberating. Freed from the reference framework of which I thought I had to comply: the designer slash advisor who had to look perfect. At the time I saw everyone as a slave to their occupation. Dressed according to your profession to present yourself perfectly. Not just clothing but also the way you present yourself, the way you talk to (potential) clients. I experienced all this as extremely exhausting. Taking of clothes became the same as taking off the mask. In these series I chose a male model, a typographer by trade, who undresses. In the first in the series (Shoes) the model takes off his shoes but is still dressed against a cluttered background. I see this as the bustle which still hangs around him. Appointments that have been made, conversations that have taken place that day, activities that still have to be done, emails that still require responses. As the model undresses the background noise reduces and the beautiful white, exhausted body becomes more prominent throughout the series. 1. Shoes 2. Pants 3. Socks 4. Shirt 5. By using conventional materials in unconventional ways, Yvette has established her own unique visual language; no means are off-limits. She is highly prolific and has no fear of scale. Her art, often containing personal messages in the form of handwritten texts, is rich in narrative, contrast and texture. It is imposing, bold and confronting, yet there is always an element of elegant aesthetics, a result of training in the Arts and decades of working as a designer. Yvette lives and works in The Netherlands.
