It seems uploaded images are never as bright as actual image file or painting. Another hopefully brighter image.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A subjective look at the Rural South Dakota Landscape. This painting is inspired by my connection to the landscape of the rural midwest and my desire to interpret that landscape through my understanding of art and painting and my unique life experiences. With this series I have been seeking to not only present a truly personal vision of the natural world but to regain a facility with the brush I seemed to have put aside. I hope the viewer will be drawn in by the composition and the lyrical quality of the brushwork while at the same time sensing that the image lacking a solid visual anchor could slip off the canvas. The painting is on 12 ounce cotton duct canvas. The canvas was covered with 6 coats of liquitex gesso by the artist before work began.

Paul was born in Viborg SD in June of 1967. Growing up on a farm in Southeastern SD has given Paul an intimate understanding of rural life and a unique perspective as an artist. Viewers of his work will not only perceive a sense of place but will also experience the complicated and sometimes contradictory feelings many rural residents experience over their lifetimes. The paintings are colorful, emotionally autobiographical and mirror the artist's feeling of connection to the land. Paul lives in the Black Hills of South Dakota with his wife and daughter. He is adjunct faculty at BHSU and when he is not teaching or painting he can be found playing guitar(sometimes singing) at local restaurants, bars, churches, coffee shops, festivals etc....
