About The Artwork

This KABUKI painting depicting the character "NIKKI DANJO" is done from the original painting done on location in the dressing room of the great actor Ichikawa Ennosuke as he dressed for his famous role as the ghostly villain Nikki Danjo. The original was done at the Kabuki-za in Tokyo. This large painting was done at the Artist's studio in the Hamptons. It was on display in a popular Japanese restaurant in NYC for a year. Kabuki is often spiritual and magical. Magically, Nikki Danjo changes from human form to a rat as necessary, thus the Grey color of his costume. The red mark on his forehead is from a wound received as a rat, which remains on his human form. The loose treatment of the textiles in this painting suggests the beautiful, ancient, woven textiles of Japan. This is a mixed media painting on canvas over an ink jet print of the original painting.
