ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Common whitethroat (Curruca communis), Eurasia & Africa. When I took the photo, he or she was sitting on a birch sapling, brilliantly lit against an almost-black ground. I wanted to paint with a greater degree of realism than I usually do, to try to capture the shining brilliance of the newly-budding birch leaves, and the remarkable jewel-like curve above the bird's eye. Alkyd oils on canvas, with acrylic underpainting and additional use of graphite pencil and marker pen. Canvas edges near-black. Signed and dated bottom right.
