Through a research based, documentary practice that considers medical history, localised spaces and language, James Winstanley uses biographical happenings to inform and interrupt methods of painting. By re-purposing imagery through recollection, memory plays large part in the process of making. As a result the initial visual elements of the paintings are subject to layering and concealment. Through this repetitive application of paint, usually block tones, there is an attention to democratic materiality, and the artists attraction to highlighting extraordinary colours and surfaces.
