This painting evokes the complexity of James Joyce's Ulysses through abstract and symbolic imagery. At the center, an octopus with outstretched tentacles mirrors the novel’s labyrinthine structure, where different narrative threads intertwine, much like Leopold Bloom’s wandering thoughts and the sprawling, chaotic world of Dublin. The deep blue backdrop suggests the oceanic depths of the subconscious, recalling Odysseus’s journey across treacherous seas, while the submarine-like sketch hints at the exploration of hidden, psychological realms. The distorted face in the center represents the fragmented identities of Bloom and Stephen Dedalus, reflecting Joyce’s use of stream-of-consciousness to depict inner turmoil and identity crises. The sketchy background of buildings evokes Dublin’s urban landscape, while the mechanical pipes hint at the industrial, modernist world that characters navigate. Like Ulysses, the painting is a journey through time, space, and self-reflection, with the octopus symbolizing the complexity of human consciousness Joyce masterfully portrays.

Tom engages with an eclectic range of images taken from the everyday, books, art history, and television. By funnelling a broad range of source material onto the canvas, the work oozes ambiguity. Although Tom is extremely selective with his choice of word and image, he combines them in such a way to blur any apparent meaning, allowing for a unique and individual voyage into the deep void created by the multitude of layers of paint and newspaper on the canvas. Tom’s work orbits around anti-capitalist themes as his bombastic brush strokes become an expression of detest towards powers of corruption. Tom’s work is a protest against the spiritually depraved world we live in and aims to sustain and invigorate the culture of art he is so infatuated by. Tom is a London-based artist who is a graduate from the University of Brighton and is currently studying a masters at UAL: Camberwell.
