Deep Breath In #1 Painting

The Singer Series explores a visualized sensation of singing inside the body. The imagined shapes and colors feel very similar to some universal truths about the way breath moves and the way resonance pings throughout the body. The image emerges over layered textured paint, grooved and woven with tools to make it resemble certain waves as it travels from one register to another. In the way that sound sparks and resonates in the head cavity, bits of highly saturated paint lights up passages of darker planes.


 While my studies in singing and painting began as a child, I went on to attain Vocal Performance degrees from UCLA and the Manhattan School of Music and had a profession as a singer and teacher. My visual work is inspired by Kandinsky, playing with surface texture to inform the physical feeling of singing.
