Demilune Painting

As a self-taught artist, I find freedom in abstract art. I enjoy working intuitively and expressively with random mark-makings or placements of paint or texture. I rarely go into a new project with a plan-- I simply start creating and something along the way will inspire me and "lead me" to the completed artwork. In the case of this piece, the curve that came out of laying down the textured layers made me instinctively think of waves. However, as this piece progressed with layers of gold and gray, I started to see the surface of the moon. The crevices and textures seemed not-of-this-world, but of the face of the familiar orb we stare up at night after night. The older I get, the more I realize my energy levels over the course of a month mimic the lunar phases. I know other people (but especially women) can relate to this energy shift. I feel a deep sense of kinship with the moon because I see myself in it. I named this piece "Demilune" both because of the shape (waning crescent) and character of this painting. We are all affected by the energy of the moon and its phases. I hope viewers who feel connected with the moon and its phases will enjoy the otherworldly energy of this painting. I hope viewers will connect with the various textures, the ridges, the shadows, and the crevices. I hope the viewers will enjoy the warm glow of the gold paint in the light, like the golden harvest moon in the sky. Varnished. Hanging wire included, would look stunning in a frame.
