About The Artwork

Painting, for me is such an adventure in discovery and ultimately a search for freedom at a soul level. Choosing to follow this path has been one of the most difficult journeys but at the same time of utmost value in terms of my growth as a human being. Most things worth doing are worth doing for the love I feel in doing them and not for any potential outcome. I trust that creating from my heart will ultimately take me where I most need to be and provide me with the resources I most need to have. This plein-air landscape surprisingly seems to honor what I am going through. It was created at Monmouth Battlefield State Park in New Jersey. I’ve painted here before and love the expansive vista and rolling landscape. And on an early fall day the colors are breathtaking! What I was drawn to in the vista was the range of view and the sense of freedom. The beautiful shapes that I saw became like puzzle pieces all fitting together in a way that told a simple, colorful story, one that I wanted to record. As I painted I became aware of historical contrasts and wondered what this landscape might have looked like during the Revolutionary War. You see this is one of the locations where battle broke out as our country searched for freedom. I imagine it a bit darker and maybe riddled with reminders of life’s preciousness and those who came before me risking their lives so that I could stand here and paint – of all things. This original oil painting was created on a gallery wrapped canvas. It is signed and ready for framing. Please contact me with any questions. Thank you.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
