About The Artwork

My paintings present the viewer with opportunities to awaken to the beauty of the human experience through ordinary passing moments. Whether quick and fleeting, or slow and contemplative, these passing moments have the power to snap us out of the trance of thought and present life as it is. This image is of my wife washing dishes in her parent's apartment in Taipei. As with much of my work, it is an ordinary moment of an ordinary day. The image was taken spontaneously, and the composition informal. And yet, it is an extremely intimate image. Beyond the obvious domestic associations, there is an ease and comfort in the posture of the figure, that belie the comfort of her childhood home. The extreme contrast of light between the interior and the strong afternoon sun against the exterior of the adjacent building give the image added drama.

I am an Australian born artist, living and working in San Francisco, California. My paintings present the viewer with opportunities to awaken to the beauty of the human experience through ordinary passing moments. Whether quick and fleeting, or slow and contemplative, these passing moments have the power to snap us out of the trance of thought and present life as it is. Each image is both an act of devotion and a meditation. Working primarily in oil-on-wood, I create representational paintings using photography as a source. Drawing inspiration from the Dutch Masters, each piece is methodically constructed in layers using the traditional grisaille technique: building up the layers from neutral colors through to the application of color and transparent glazes. The painting process allows me to truly embody and absorb the image, while the act of viewing a completed painting offers a wellspring of memory, emotion, and meaning.
