About The Artwork

Lozada is drawn to ladders for the visual repetition the rungs provide —a bolder version of the pencil crosshatches she uses for shading—and because as a tool, they allow one to defy gravity and move vertically through space. The patches of midnight blue antique silk velvet swallow light in a manner not possible with pigments—the artist uses the depth its darkness to provide a void and stillness that counterbalance the movement of color. Images that occur frequently in her work are the tumbling figure, and the Chi Rho (which in antiquity was used as a symbol in both war and religion) that appears as an x superimposed on a variety of consonants, most frequently the P and F. Language and reverse writing appear frequently in her compositions. The painting is comprised of 3 large sheets of paper, taped on the back with acid free tape, which allows the painting to be folded. This painting was one of two works on paper in her solo show of contemporary tin-glaze at the Galerie Béatrice Hodent de Broutelles, Mairie du 7e Arrondisement, Paris, France.

Terrell Lozada (b. 1962) is an American painter and sculptor living in Paris. She uses imagery and language to create works that explore the metaphysics of gender and power in contemporary society. Her work represents an internal, emotional world through objects subjected to unreliable or suspended gravity. Her aesthetic fulcrum is the late 18th century, particularly as it relates to French architecture. She works in a wide variety of media including watercolor, oil on panel, cast bronze, etchings and carved wood. She is currently exploring tin-glazed terracotta (faïence stannifère) to combine color and form.
