About The Artwork

Years ago i made my living painting billboards and signage. These experiences have influenced my aesthetic greatly. Over that time I was intrigued by the geometry created by the old ads as they were being painted over and how the meaning of the images and lettering changed when taken out of context. People always asked "how can you work so large"? The scale is an important part of the medium and the origins of these works. I used to tell people it was like painting a thousand small abstract paintings when combined made another image. We used indelible pencils and markers to layout the ads. The lines would bleed through showing an underlying structure not view-able from the road. The last aspect is the subliminal nature of billboards and advertising. This work is one piece of a series telling the story of a brand evolving over time. This is the second of 5 pieces all executed on recycled galvanized billboard panels. Hope you enjoy these works as much as I've enjoyed making them.
