I live in Chile, in the 4th region, in the pampas. I have this spectacle in front of me every day, and I had wanted to paint it for a long time. I took many photos before finding the one that would suit me, on a slightly cloudy day, with beautiful late afternoon shadows. I painted this picture in 3 months, but part time because I am building my house. Drought has been raging for several years in this region, and the plants are suffering, already many cacti have died, and when they die, they collapse on themselves, their branches are like arms that no longer have the strength to stand, and fall slowly (several months are needed). The shrubs resist, they let some branches die, to keep the main ones alive, which gives them this green and gray appearance. The composition is centered on a cactus attacked by a parasite (Tristeryx Aphyllus) with red and delicious fruits. I painted the clouds a little bluer than they are in reality, in order to lighten the top of the painting and thus avoid crushing the depth. The mountains in the background are painted in a resulting tone with a mixture of purple, prussian blue and gray. This gray, I gradually reinforce it with ocher and burnt umber to paint the mountains behind the plain. I usually do little reserve, I paint all the shots, although I know they will be partially covered, but I believe that even if it gives a lot of extra work, it contributes to the final realism. For example, for the green and gray bush in the foreground, I first paint what is not visible, the other side of the bush, and gradually I paint its heart and the different levels that bring it to the foreground. I hope that the spectator will feel like me the peace that this landscape inspires, and that he will ask himself the same question as me: what is there behind these mountains?

I'm a French painter and engraver, born 1954, living en Chile for 12 years. The required level of skill to make good etchings allowed me to become a more demanding paintor. I like the technical challenges of painting and engraving. I have been teaching painting in Chile for 10 years. Figuration for etching, hyperrealism and expressionist abstraction for painting are what I prefer to do. Engraving: My work is done in at least two stages: a plate for the image support, and another for tattoos. This superposition allows me to create encounters between cultures that have never met (example: the mask of Tutankamon with Ashentis tattoos). My goal tends to renew the view that the viewer has on the various elements. Abstract painting: The Chilean culture made me know runes, which have lost their original meanings and acquired here a magical dimension. I abstractly report the magical meaning of these runes. Hyperrealism: In my landscape paintings (I fell in love with pampas and Chilean deserts) I try to erase the effects specific to photography rather than trying to approach a photographic rendering. I do not want people saying "it looks like a picture" but "it looks like reality". But as nature does not care much about pictorial rendering, the reality is rarely as it appears on the painting. Especially since I usually add a detail denoting the human presence.
