About The Artwork

"Don't Let the Sun Set On Your Dreams" Acrylic Mixed Media Collage and Painting This painting's story: Creative expression through her art set Jocelyn on the road to healing. When she turned 47 in February 2015, Jocelyn felt the undeniable desire to become a full-time artist after a long career in the high-tech industry. She feels a strong presence of vitality when she creates. Jocelyn expressed this desire with her husband. To which he (her soon-to-be-ex) replied, "What if you fail?" That reply, even though it was heart-breaking, put fire in her heart. So she declared: “I’m going be a fearless, financially and soul-fulfilled artist. Along the way, I am going to inspire other artists to not give up on their dreams. Jocelyn channeled her anger as fuel for her art as she created this painting, “Don’t Let the Sun Set on Your Dreams.” Since then, she has felt so alive and true to who she truly is as a creative being. Due to its popularity, and despite the current culture and mindset by Carmel Galleries "against selling Prints (Giclees)" Jocelyn made a critical decision to make her artworks accessible to those who cannot otherwise afford to purchase her Original artworks. This artwork is Jocelyn's best-selling print when she had her own gallery and working art studio in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Art viewers resonated and loved the message in this artwork as they felt very inspired to be passionate, courageous, resilient and TO LIVE THEIR DREAMS! Among other places, a large print of this is prominently displayed at a Dance Studio in Carmel-by-the Sea, at a family's home whose son is training for the Olympics, and at workplaces. Mixed Media Techniques: Jocelyn collaged this painting with blue-dyed vintage book pages in its entirety as the background layer. Then she used masking techniques to create the "DON'T LET THE" sections of the lettering -- showing the book pages underneath. She used stitched chambray denim and burlap - both with lace to create the words "SUN SET" And then she hand-painted the words "ON YOUR DREAMS" with India Ink. Other Materials Used: Acrylic gesso, paints, medium and gels; blue hand-dyed vintage book pages, tissue paper where the Sunset is painted, black lava texture Notes: The sides of the ORIGINAL PAINTING is mostly painted in BLUE with several markings, and the tissue paper where the sunset is painted is left visible. If you need the sides of THE CANVAS OF THIS ORIGINAL PAINTING, please send Jocelyn a message to request for a specific COLOR OF the SIDES OF THE CANVAS. Jocelyn Cruz (Kadach) is the JOURNEY OF LIFE PAINTER / Encaustic Mixed Media Artist / Owner of Lighthouse Art & Design. She is currently living and working in San Jose, California. Her artworks has been featured on the cover of 65/57 Degrees Magazine in 2015. Jocelyn’s deep love of the Sea as expressed in her artworks, originated from her Maritime roots. She is a granddaughter of a Mariner and comes from a long bloodline of true artisans. Jocelyn was born and spent her early childhood in a coastal town in the Philippines. Jocelyn’s grandfather made his living from the Pacific Ocean by building engines for ships. He also owned commercial fishing boats. Jocelyn’s memories of shipyards, rusted metal from piers and boats and salty air are often integrated in her work. Her color palette mostly consists of shades of blue to take art viewers to remember the salty smells of the coast and hear the ocean’s waves. Jocelyn’s classic signature style often includes the use of vintage nautical charts, air mail envelopes, post cards and letters. This comes from the memories of her late father's letters when he migrated from the Philippines to the United States. She also creates customized postal marks when it goes with the story of her subject matter. Jocelyn was also interested in designing from an early age watching her grandmother and mother sew clothes. The sounds of the old pedal Singer sewing machine that Jocelyn grew up with are echoed in her art, as she incorporates fabric, distressed leather and/or stitches into her paintings. Jocelyn’s brothers, aunts and uncles are very creative as well. They are all true design geniuses and talented musicians in their own right. The typography and musical elements that Jocelyn incorporates into her artwork are due to their influence. Not all of Jocelyn’s memories are filled with the beauty of the Sea. The dark images from parts of her childhood and quest to persevere throughout her life – including her journey to become a Full-time Artist -- make their way into her artworks. In 2011, after Jocelyn’s oldest brother, Jocelle, was in a fatal motorcycle accident, Jocelyn suffered from delayed onset of PTSD symptoms related to the abuse she and her brother endured in their childhood. As a result, there were times she contemplated ending her life. On one dark night, she took art supplies that she received from her son, Matthew, and painted her first artwork, “Journey to the Lighthouse.
