FavoritesThe mother of the British Modernist Movement, Lesbian, Feminist and civil rights activist, Doris Hatt. Doris' art and story inspired me to paint this portrait of her. Her home and studio are in the same town as my own small studio and gallery. I've worked from old B&W photos of her from the 1930s, from which I have tried to capture not just a likeness but a sense of the pure unadulterated creativity she is celebrated for. This is painted in watercolour with using granulation and heavy brush strokes to create a striking and engaging image.
