For most of my life, while I had a desire, I lacked the courage to paint. I've never been interested in painting what I see, but in painting what I felt and experienced. When I walked into a fine art classroom in 2009 for the first time, the instructor Stan Brodsky, allowed for a place of belonging. He had a unique ability to be a teacher; in every sense of the word. As an accomplished painter he had been represented by June Kelly Gallery/NYC. His PhD. was awarded from Columbia University and early on worked at The Sidney Janis Gallery, NYC. Last week he passed away at 94 yrs of age. I returned home after the funeral feeling a deep sense of loss. My Mentor and a classroom of peers who once shared Tuesdays together was now gone forever. I arrived home and felt the need to paint. I worked quickly and intuitively, then stood back. It immediately made sense! The image reminded me of myself, on this journey, reflecting on the past- hence the rear view mirror.

I'm fascinated by the essence of painting itself—its process, how the paint moves on the canvas, and the vivid expressiveness of colors and textures that create a tangible and emotional bridge between my work and the viewer. The layers of paint invite you into a world of sensation and meaning that's yours to interpret. My approach often involves revisiting and reworking the canvas, much like the way relationships evolve and renew over time. My art reflects my journey—my introspections, connections with others, and, fundamentally, my relationship with painting itself. Human figures frequently emerge in my work, symbolizing the universal experiences of emotion, values, encounters, and the passage of time. These figures capture fleeting moments, bridging the present with the memory of a distant, earlier self. While I play with the balance between reality and imagination, I also embrace the unpredictable, using it to capture your attention and keep you engaged. A recurring theme in my work is visibility, particularly reflecting on my identity as a woman navigating a phase of life that often feels overlooked by society. It's this struggle for visibility, for recognition, that resonates through my art, connecting with viewers on a profoundly personal level.
