Early Man Painting

I have suddenly become fascinated by past cultures. I have little understanding of archaeology or of history. I know nothing of how people in the past lived , worked and traded with others. At school these things did not capture my interest in the least . Recently I was asking myself why do I paint ? What is it that makes me want to paint? After thinking about it for a while, I still could not find a satisfactory answer to my question. Not that long ago I had a good friend round for a drink. At some point in the evening I asked him if he would like to have go at painting something in my studio. I told him everything was set up ready for him to just have a go. After leaving him in my studio for about 15 mins I peeked in and had a look at what he was up to and I loved what I saw. I had left every colour possible at his disposal. He had chosen a dark carmine colour and had added streaks of black to it. I immediately felt I was looking at primitive art The colours gave me a feeling of miserable dejection. When the Abstract had dried we decided that I should add something to it. After looking at the colours and the process of how it was created, it became clear to me that we all have something wonderful to capture and express without using words. In my opinion a serious primitive mood had been created and personified here. The only contribution I could make to this work was my own interpretation of Early Man. This takes me back to my question Why do I paint? The simple answer to that question is that there is no need for an answer. Man was painting in caves a very long time ago. It was instinctual. It was the expression of a plethora of emotions without the use of words.
