Apelbaum uses multiple mediums to create his artwork ranging from ink, oil and acrylic painting. His pieces are set with a combination of techniques depicting abstract works with figurative drawings and written words. His pieces grasp the light we see through church stained-glass windows through the use of LED lights behind canvas which has been cut to fit the specific dimensions of each piece. By combining the world of technology with the world of painting, Apelbaum transforms the alienating power of technology into a liberating process of interconnection. Apelbaum’s art endeavors to remind its viewer that a people cannot be defined as static beings, but rather as creatures of change, both opaque and abstract. The subjects of his paintings are people he has known for many years whose secrets and innermost desires have been shared with him. Apelbaum is captivated by the unique reactions of his subjects as they interact both with each other and with the environment. One subject is more straightforward and outgoing, while another is more reserved and anxious. Each painting describes the life and character of the person he draws. He uses color to describe their experiences and emotions. To compliment the colors and the light in his paintings, Apelbaum builds his own canvases (made of silk and self engineered coating). This process allows him to manipulate the LED lights that oscillate from behind the canvas. In natural light the first layer of paint is present, but once you switch off the light and turn on the LED, different layers shine through. By reacting differently in all types of light Apelbaum presents us paintings that show different aspects of the subjects soul. By enveloping the viewer in the intimacies of the sitters‘ subjectivity a dialogue is created (be it one with your own personal demons, other guests, or the painting itself). Apelbaum appeals to our common humanity by expressing said humanity in the singularity of Being in Art.
