About The Artwork

"Empty Words" 36" x 24" oil on panel "I surrender daily to the deep understanding, the care, and responsibility of my connections with those around me. Being a part of this emotionally disposable society leaves me hollow. Existing within is sometimes the only solution." - Brittany Loar brittanyloar.com

I operate under an imperative of coexisting dichotomies, compelled to continually explore those living within human connection, interaction, and the physical manifestation of emotions. For the better part of a decade I’ve spent my career as a designer observing and utilizing human psychology to determine visual decisions in a way to influence their state of mind. That time and experience alone has deepened my curiosity in exploring emotional tensions within myself and others. But rather than use my findings to manipulate an audience, I desire to expose the raw honesty and beauty their coexistence creates. Via contemporary illustrations in a variety of mediums, my work invites a dialogue about the dualities and complexities of the mortal condition that inspire me daily. I choose my subject based on the range of visual tensions it will allow such as abnormal physical positioning or facial expression and high levels of contrasting light, capitalizing on these tensions with the balance of mediums. Some pieces demand a much more minimal execution such as the full graphite pieces while others swing to the complex, made up of combinations such as black india ink, acrylics, and conté. It is endlessly challenging and interesting to generate this work because life experiences, change, and interaction are perpetual and I’m fulfilled through exploring these continuums.
