About The Artwork

This painting is part of a series of 4 that was born out of my contemplation of sunlight as it travelled through glass and crystal prisms. It was during this time in the American Southwest that I grew obsessed with the sky, with the unimaginable beauty of the desert. There I came across Arcosanti, the work of Italian architect Paolo Soleri. It's an urban laboratory in the high desert of central Arizona, designed according to the concept of Arcology. A concept for cities in the future that embody the co-presence of architecture and ecology, an experiential space to "prototype" a self-sustaining community. I imagined what this futuristic idea of a community could look like if one day, our carbon-negative cities looked like arcologies. Oil, Canvas

Monica Figueredo is a multidisciplinary artist with a B.A in Fine Arts from OCAD University in Toronto, Canada. She has exhibited globally in a variety of media ranging from painting, sculpture, installation and documentary filmmaking. Her multi-ethnic upbringing and her practice as a journey woman, as the peripatetic who maps an alternate world by her journey through it, has exposed her to multitude of cultures, faiths and cosmological knowledge. All of which play a key intuitive role in her creative process through the language of abstraction. The reconciliation of found objects, recycled fabrics and painted canvases made at different times are brought together, offering unexpected encounters and territories of present and future personal mythologies.
