"Erlijk duurt het langst" 3/10 Painting

Drawn, carved, printed and painted by hand in my home studio in Cologne, Germany. Each print is an original piece of art with its own unique characteristics, its own distinct signs of texture, just like a fingerprint. “Erlijk duurt het langst” is a colourful, meaningful, stilllife printed in a deep black, but painted by hand with many layers of colour and even added with some golden, metallic sparkles. The print itself is approximately DINA3 printed on an DINA2 sheet. This Work is part of the "Dutch sayings" series, in which several sayings are illustrated in floral stills and criticize the modern way of online dating or generally dealing with love. "Eerlijk duurt het langst" says that being honest is most important, but shows a collection of flowers which are often used to create drugs. Is it only possible to be honest when being under the influence of those? The vase has several faces, which also seems to be a problem dealing with people nowadays. In the left corner is the naked back of the aetolian princess Leda. Leda was admired by Zeus, who seduced her in the guise of a swan. In the upper right corner, is the "Bocca della Verità" which can be translated as "the mouth of truth". According to enduring medieval legend, it will bite off the hand of any liar who places their hand in its mouth, or, alternatively, any who utters a lie while their hand is in the mouth. The two people on the right are inspired by a statue showing the male allegory of Time, shown as an old man, undressing the allegory of truth. In this specific example the truth isn't naked, which can be interpreted as a gesture of feminismn, or a truth that won't let herself be reveiled. In the left corner are the wise three monkeys, which are often used to refer to a lack of moral responsibility. The musical notes refer to the songs "Sweet little lies" by Bülow and "Truth Hurts" by Lizzo.
