About The Artwork

This painting from the Estrogen tax Series, continues the artist's exploration of social rules and gender. She coined the term to describe the compulsory social charges levied on women based on their reproductive eligibility. The image of the winged face is inspired by a stone carving on the grounds of Versailles. The Chi Rho (which in antiquity was used as a symbol in both war and religion) appears in her compositions as an x superimposed on a variety of consonants, most frequently the P or F. In this case, the x is comprised of ladders. Language and reverse writing appear frequently in her compositions. Some of the letters are cut out and backed with silk satin or antique silk velvet.

Terrell Lozada (b. 1962) is an American painter and sculptor living in Paris. She uses imagery and language to create works that explore the metaphysics of gender and power in contemporary society. Her work represents an internal, emotional world through objects subjected to unreliable or suspended gravity. Her aesthetic fulcrum is the late 18th century, particularly as it relates to French architecture. She works in a wide variety of media including watercolor, oil on panel, cast bronze, etchings and carved wood. She is currently exploring tin-glazed terracotta (faïence stannifère) to combine color and form.
