About The Artwork

It's a quiet evening after hours at the Silos. Even then a few tourists were out to get a few photos and preview where they would likely be tomorrow. I was among them, even though I live in the area. I guess you could call me a "local tourist", or perhaps just an artist who loves those late day shots where the light can be so dramatic and colorful and the numerous things to see and paint in the area. The Silos in Waco, Texas are one of the most popular attractions going anywhere and deserve to be included in my "Waco Landmarks and Attractions Series." I enjoyed painting this immensely using almost entirely palette knives in the process. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

For Waco, Texas-based professional artist and instructor Lee James, it’s all about color and texture. Lee’s style is best described as blending aspects of impressionism and realism with a strong emphasis on bold, vivid, even playful use of color in light-filled paintings. His favored medium is acrylic as it can be used like oils or watercolor. Thrilled to embark on each new painting, his ultimate reward is your enjoyment of the “worlds” he creates in each painting. Lee has a lifelong interest in architecture, having owned two National Historic Register Plantations and even designed homes. Structures of some type will almost always be found in his landscapes. A love of coastal, boats, cars and trucks, and animals have also had a profound influence in his work as well as a strong interest in nocturnal scenes. Lee is not a “high noon” painter. Early morning, later in the afternoon, and evening…”these are the times when colors are more intense, subjects are more interesting” and will always be part of his works. With an intense love of color, Lee rarely mixes color on the palette, choosing instead to pickup multiple colors, with a palette knife, and “let it happen” as the paint goes on the canvas. “The result is far more exciting!”
