Expulsion Painting

This is the first painting I created when I noticed a connection with the expulsion story and today’s self-imposed disconnect from nature. It is created in four panels, with two combined center panels. I sometimes use mythological stories or themes to help explain concepts or my point of view. I feel Western society is losing contact with the natural world. Our connection to food is a walk through the supermarket filled with processed food-like products. Farming is big business using pesticides, herbicides, genetically modified crops and concentrated animal feeding operations. Pills replace food for health. And science, in the hands of big money, replaces wisdom. In the Expulsion, I use traditional media of watercolor, gouache, acrylic paint, chalk and oil pastel, combined with photography on paper. My process involves repeating the creation and destruction of images in layers that represent the struggle in life. It also symbolizes the marriage of opposites -- natural vs. technical, hand-made vs. machine made.
