ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painted head is inspired by 18th century court fashion and Commedia dell’Arte masks. The expressive brushstrokes contrast and the elongated nose are slightly at odds with the character of the face, giving her an a mused rather naughty exoression. This piece was one of three selected by curator Sacha Craddock for ‘Creekside Open’ in 2019. It is supported by a small white fin-shaped stand and comes with a small white shelf if needed for display.

I make figurative paintings and sculptures inspired by historical styles such as Victorian Gothic, Chinoiserie and 19th century India, constructing life-size painted cutouts from wood. My work is inspired by Indian miniature painting, Pop art, Commedia dell'Arte and folklore art. The cutouts are arranged in various contexts - as paintings on walls, in clusters, like stage sets. I was short-listed for the Contemporary British Painting Prize last year, and am currently working with Arts Council funding, the 'Develop Your Creative Practise' with mentors Sacha Craddock and Manick Govinda.
