About The Artwork

This piece is part of an ongoing series called Fake News, whereby the theme is a commentary on the 2017 Presidential election and how false information lead to Trump as announced as President. Each piece explored a duality of motific gesture – one is always brightly colored, translucent yet fractured, while the other is thicker, slightly raised out from the canvas with a rough, grainy and cracked texture. One is the “true” original created first, and the other side a pastiche upon it. Which one is the original? Is it more compelling, or does it become overshadowed? How much does the pastiche influence, block, fracture, or inhibit the original? The unpredictable duality within each piece represents the manifestation of extremes. Juxtaposed truth and untruth disrupts the balance between fact and fabrication and the grey area of interpretation in between. Ultimately, these disruptions cloud our thoughts and feelings and, in turn, influences our decisions. Just like the Butterfly Effect proverb as causation for environmental catastrophe, the smallest inflection of ambivalence can cause us to react to interpretations of truth in unimaginable ways.

I am an Australian-American artist living and working in Washington DC. My work explores the relationship between the organic and the synthetic through the deconstruction and abstraction of the world around us, often focusing on social, political and cultural issues. My philosophy concerns the impermanence of all things - how things grow, evolve and devolve by uncovering what is unseen, or hidden. By unveiling the secret messages found in all things, is, to me, emancipating and enlightening. My technique is varied and diverse. I prefer working with oil/oil pastels, acrylics, encaustics, charcoal and watercolors. My process over the last 20 years shows an obsession with layers - layers of opacity and transparency, layers of textures, layers of meaning. I attempt to paint the changing essence of subject matter, as seen through my own sociological lens. I try to find a voice that represents the fluctuating essence of my subjects. My ambition is to distill truth from evolving hidden meanings. My work has been exhibited throughout America and Australia. I keep a studio just outside of Washington DC.
