About The Artwork

This image was actually inspired by a work by Andres Serrano that depicts a sacrificial lamb (a head of Jesus atop a lamb's body) -- it was very evocative but in a haunting, disturbing way. I was at a party where this picture was hung on a wall, and I ended up sitting in front of it for hours. It had a sense of religiosity that I have seen elsewhere -- often in outsider art -- that is deeply psychological, kind of familiar in an odd way, and terrifying. It haunted me for months. And then, out of the blue, this image appeared in my head, and I had to paint it. In a way, it has to do with all kinds of cross-overs -- between different species, between the animate and the inanimate, perhaps between life and death. Perhaps it is about the cosmos in some way -- the fertile void that we are all born out of and the form we take based on its whims of the moment of our birth.

I have lived and worked in New York City since 1982. Having grown up in the Southwest, I continue to be influenced by my memory's images of vast, spreading spaces, caves, promontories, overhangs..... At the same time, I am fascinated by crossover entities -- particularly when the inanimate takes on the appearance of living matter. Space, for me, is a psychological, emotional experience that often defines who we are at a given moment and sets the mood for what occurs within that place. But spaces also reflect our influence on them, and the traces of who we are and what we do. Currently many of my landscape images show the effects of climate change.
