Feedback Painting

This piece is inspired by the portraiture of Cindy Sherman; it focuses on decentering the colonial gaze and affect by using abstract mark making, intense colouring and non-traditional posing. This piece is a part of my larger ongoing project to decenter the colonial gaze by using selfies and focusing on non-traditional poses.The use of selfies has been an ongoing interest of mine to give power back to the subjects in my work.The rest of my process largely focuses on affect by using abstract marks, intense colour and lighting to allow the viewer many points of entry into the painting.
