ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is my 5th painting in my series of Flowers Of Remembrance. Remembrance has multiple meanings including to acknowledge changes in personal self-identity. To ponder and search for new meaning in life.Tulips are a recognised as a symbol of 'perfect love', often tied to Turkish and Persian folktales. Although these beautiful flowers originated in Central Asia, they went on to become extremely popular in Turkey and then in Holland too. For me red tulips they are an excellent motif for spiritual transformation through self love and into romantic love set against an atmospheric yet vivid sky representing life. I have always loved the work of Vincent Van Gogh and especially his landscape work so i was most definitely considering his work whilst making this painting. At The Going Down Of The Sun And In The Morning We Will Remember Them , these immortal lines by Laurence Binyon are so evocative of Hope and Gratitude for those who gave their lives so that we can live in freedom. I have written these lines in graphite into the paint and then varnished the painting. This is a technique I have seen Cy Twombly use, he is an artist I greatly admire. This is a 16 inch wide x12 inch high acrylic and graphite painting on canvas board. It is not framed and it has no hanging gear attached. It will be sent wrapped in a strong cardboard box protected in glassine paper and bubble wrap.

Micheal is very aesthetically informed by Post-Impressionism, biomorphic sculpture, Dadaism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. Micheal draws inspiration from many of the Beat movement writers, particularly Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski and William S Burroughs, and a plethora of musical genres. Many of the early Abstract Expressionist artists such as Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Cy Twombly, Clyfford Still and Mark Rothko are often referenced in his works and help contribute towards his artistic thinking. The themes of his work are wide-ranging and include abstract figurative or biomorphic art and abstract expressionism. Playful surrealism, highly coloured and full of motion, using a multitude of mediums. Micheal’s artistic practice encompasses a painterly spiritual cosmology, in which the journey of inner evolution and growth is repeatedly explored. Employing the full spectrum of abstractionist and suggestive modes of representation, his work surveys the depths of the collective unconscious through subtle allusions to personal experiences of travel and transformation. Micheal lived in Iquitos, in the Peruvian Amazon, for two and a half years and conceptually, he is continuously inspired by his deeply transformative experiences with Shamanism, notions of wisdom associated with ancient cultures and the Archaeology of The Sacred. During this time, he developed a strong connection with Amazonia and its flora and fauna and its people. This passion has led him to dedicate himself to both producing art and also to raising funds for the protection of the Amazon and other ecological biomes. Please see his page for more information of the ecological causes that Micheal supports. Micheal Haran is a West London based fine artist who studied at The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, working predominantly in oils and acrylics on canvas.
