My work is heavily influenced by the natural world, my surroundings, color, repetition and patterns. I am also inspired by the binary energies of chaos and order, growth and decay. Within my paintings, I combine elements of representation and abstraction to show this inspiration, while incorporating a strong sense of beauty. My artwork often starts with an ordered approach while my ideas get outlined on the surface. Influenced by color, shapes and light, the process of painting develops with many layers. Repetitious forms and patterns emerge, creating abstract and playful landscapes. My abstractions reflect the journeys and paths we discover in the process of living amidst this natural order. The repetition of object and form attempts to further understand and interpret the natural rhythmic order of the universe—micro and macro—as exhibited by the natural things all around us. My focus is driven by my desire to understand how individual elements and pieces come together to create a whole. My current works use cellular structures as a point of reference. Using ovals and circles as my primary shape, I begin with a repetition of these shapes to create an abstract environment into which these shapes move along the two dimensional surface. Working in layers, I create a floating environment that can be cellular, floral, or purely abstract.

Ali Herrmann is a mixed media painter, colorist and science lover, whose work explores cellular structures as an origin into her abstract artworks. Creating what she terms ‘micro-biome landscapes,’ Herrmann uses SEM images and organic shapes as inspiration to explore concepts of blood, bacteria, fungi, and unicellular structures within her boldly colorful, abstract artworks. Exploring themes of repetition, rhythmic orders, geometric shapes, and chaos-order theory, Ali brings attention to nature's details that are often overlooked.
