Art Description

Painting: Oil, Charcoal, Pencil, Paint, Black & White on Wood, Other.

ASH, OIL AND CHARCOAL ON BURNED PANEL

Mountains frequently referring to real places that already have specific meaning attached to them. This work is based on a painting by Caspar David Friedrich.

What started as an experiment eight years ago, turned into a technique and style I've been working in since. I take torches to wood panels which are then burned black, apply a layer of ash and charcoal, and then proceed to paint the 'canvas' using nothing but white oil paint in thin successive layers. The paint mixes with the ash and burned substrate to create tones of gray and the paintings seem to emerge from the blackness. Since 2018 I've been painting a series of works based entirely on my family's old photographs, some dating to 1950s and 1960s Czechoslovakia.

Signed on the back. Hangs on cleats. Ships in a crate. The work has two panels that attach together top and bottom and hang as a single piece.
