This paintings is inspired by a Japanese technique of reparation of objects called Kintsugi. The philosophy behind it is to put precious objects back together with a mixture of glue and gold after they were broken. The history of the object becomes visible as a way to embrace what would normally be perceived as a flaw and makes the object more beautiful. I used this technique as a metaphor for emotional wounds, how we decide to treat them and how they define us.

Statement: As a female artist I chose to make women the foreground of my work. Ever since I can remember I have always been deeply troubled and aware of the uneven dynamics of genders, therefor fascinated and concerned by human nature itself. Women’s sense of vulnerability in the face of society and the constant fight for empowerment is the contrast in which I build my narrative. While my own experience as a girl, a woman and the mother of a daughter allows me to stay in touch with multiple aspects of womanhood and raise a question: Could the way women are treated be a sad reflexion of how we treat earth and life in general; as something that needs to be conquered, dominated and discardable? I’m indirectly addressing this question through my artistic process as I tend to focus more on the introspective aspect of the experience. I’ve come to believe that unevenness between men and women and the misogynistic culture could be the rotten apple of humanity’s core values. Bio: Self-taught, Roxanne Sauriol was born in 1987 in Montreal. Following the birth of her only daughter, she undertakes the work of a first collection. After her first publication in an art magazine she pushed her career forward and found herself quickly immersed in the art world. Sauriol paints from her studio, downtown Montreal where she photographs and conceptualizes the images that will then be used as a visual reference for her final work, meticulously painted on wood with acrylics. Sauriol is now at her 11th exhibition, including four solo shows.
